Two months since the start of President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, the situation is still as volatile as it was in the conflict’s opening days.
Initially, President Trump had suggested that the war, a combined effort between Israel and the United State’s, would be extremely short, lasting just four weeks.
However,President Trump has faced criticism over the inconsistencies in his suggested timeline.
In early April, Trump was quoted making contradictory statements, including “Always been about a four-week process,” “four weeks — or less,” “four to five weeks,” “whatever it takes,” “no time limits” and “short-term excursion.”
On Apr. 7, in response to extreme, apocalyptic threats from President Trump to completely destroy Iranian civilization, including warnings to target power plants and bridges, Iran cut direct diplomatic ties with the United States. However, conversation between the two countries continues through the mediating country of Pakistan, and the United States and Iran were able to agree on a fragile two-week ceasefire lasting from Apr. 8 to Apr. 22.
Even as the current ceasefire talks progress, sporadic military engagements persist, meaning that the fragile truce could collapse at any moment.
One of the most shocking aspects of this war is the damage inflicted upon civilian targets within the Iranian state. According to the New York Times, the United States and Israel have executed devastating damage to multiple civilian buildings, including 22 schools and 17 health care facilities.
However, the devastation could be much higher. The Iranian Red Crescent Society, the country’s primary humanitarian relief organization, said on April 2 that at least 763 schools and 316 health care facilities had been damaged or destroyed in the war.
Civilian casualties continue to rise, with estimates of over 3,600 dead and 26,000 injured, though exact figures remain difficult to confirm due to limited access for unbiased observers.
The destruction of Iranian infrastructure has disrupted access to electricity, clean water, medical care, and a proper way of life across many Iranian regions and intensified the need for a humanitarian response.
Aid organizations like the Red Cross have warned that if the conflict continues at its current pace, it could trigger a large-scale refugee crisis, with neighboring countries needing to brace for influxes of Iranian civilians.
The war in Iran has also had monumental effects on the international community by causing massive fluctuation in oil, which all countries are heavily dependent on.
On April 13, 2026, U.S. Central Command announced a blockade of all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports and blocking the vitally important Strait of Hormuz.
Around 20% of the world’s oil, or approximately 20 million barrels per day, passes through the strait, and its blockade has caused worldwide impacts on the price security of oil.
Crude oil prices have surged past $140 per barrel, their highest level since the 2008 financial crisis. Domestically, gas prices have climbed to over $6 per gallon in many states. Internationally, several European and Asian nations have called for emergency sessions at the United Nations to discuss the economic and humanitarian effects of the strait blockade.
With the existence of the internet, social media has become a powerful tool for shaping public perception. Both the Trump Administration and Iranian state-supported groups have increasingly used AI-generated images for propaganda purposes.
Pro-Trump accounts have circulated images showing overwhelming U.S. military dominance, while Iranian accounts have created AI Lego rap videos making fun of President Trump, his online statements, and U.S. military action within their nation.
Online comments from President Trump have also been provocative.
On Apr. 1, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!”
In addition, on Easter Sunday, Trump posted, ”Open the F**kin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.”
Whether this two-week ceasefire marks a turning point in the conflict or has no effect is yet to be seen.
