Zohran Mamdani elected as New York City mayor
On Nov. 4, Zohran Mamdani, 34, won the mayoral election of New York City, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor. He is a democratic socialist who supports making New York more affordable and prioritizing universal free childcare.
UPS Jet Engine Crash Kills 14, FAA grounds MD-11 cargo planes
In Louisville, as a UPS cargo plane took off, its left engine detached and ignited in a fireball, killing fourteen people, including the three pilots onboard. The Federal Aviation Administration has recently grounded the jet’s model, McDonnell Douglas MD-11, for inspection.
Japan elects first female prime minister
On Oct. 21, 64-year-old Sanae Takaichi was elected as the first female prime minister in Japan’s history by Parliament. Nicknamed “Iron Lady” like her idol Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi takes a staunch conservative stance on social issues, Japan’s stagnant economy, and international relationships.
Historic Florentine Diamond Resurfaces in Canada
Earlier this month, the Florentine diamond that once belonged to the Medici family and Hapsburgs dynasty resurfaced. Thought to have disappeared, sold, or recut, the 137-carat diamond was actually kept in a Canadian bank vault for 100 years according to the request of Empress Zita after being exiled from Austria-Hungary.
