Sometimes, all it takes is a quick power nap to dominate the basketball court.
Sophia Azzam ’26 has definitely mastered both. Azzam has been a part of Chadwick girls basketball for four years. Even though she doesn’t play a specific position for the team, Azzam’s adaptability plays a key part in the team’s success.
Azzam has experimented in different sports her whole life, but she never stuck to another sport like she did with basketball.
When Azzam joined a club team, it not only allowed her to build on her basketball skills, but the club also helped her gain valuable connections with her teammates.
Azzam said, “My favorite part about basketball is the friendships I have been able to make along the way. I’ve been on many teams, and in every single one of them I have made some of my closest friendships that last a lifetime. Being a part of a basketball team is like being a part of a family.”
Taking the essence of family with her, Azzam curates a welcoming and peaceful environment on the Chadwick squad with her co-captain Araya Tekeste ’26.
Addi Hamdi ’27, who has been on the team for two years, said, “The team environment is really positive and fun to be a part of. Azzam is always encouraging us, and her answers to our questions are always incredibly helpful.”
Girl’s basketball coach Erin Cermak describes the two co-captains as equal complements to each other. Although both have different personalities and strengths, combining the two captains results in a powerful force on the court.
The two constantly work on improving each other’s skills, with Azzam fondly saying, “The most memorable moments I have while playing Chadwick basketball are when Araya and I would 1v1 each other after practice.”
Azzam is always sure to reflect on her performance after each game. “I am regularly looking for ways to improve,” Azzam said. “I am always thinking about how the team or I could improve for our next game. Don’t get me wrong, winning feels amazing, but winning one game is just one step closer to an end goal.”
Assistant girls basketball coach Natalie Garcia and Cermak have noticed Azzam’s strong character as well. Cermak describes Azzam as “thoughtful, critical, and kind,” which is not just reflected in Azzam’s attitude, but also shown through how she carries herself off and on the court.
Besides putting in the work during her practices, Azzam has to stay afloat at her two jobs, keep up with her school work, and take part in Athletic Council.
“Time management is for sure something I struggle with, but when something is important to me, I will make sure to make things work. It honestly all comes down to priorities.”
Although Azzam’s inspiring work ethic is already shown through her daily schedule, she said, “Coach Nat will always say ‘Give it 110%,’ and as simple as that sounds, it is all I need to hear to give it my all.”
Beyond basketball, Azzam likes to enjoy the smaller things in life: nature, music, and journaling. Between her hectic schedule, being able to recharge before and after games is crucial for Azzam.
“My pregame routine is to make sure I eat and stay hydrated; before a match, I will always take a nap and listen to music.”
As 2025 marks Azzam’s final basketball season with Chadwick, her determination, focus, and compassion has already left a lasting impression on the basketball team and on Chadwick.
