Here are a few of the most important news headlines from this past month.
California rejoins World Health Organization network
On Jan 23., a day after the United States withdrew from WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network (GOARN)—an international partnership and network to address health emergencies—governer Gavin Newsom announced California would become the first U.S. state to join the GOARN. Less than a month later, on Feb. 3, the state of Illinois also joined.
Thailand Train Crash Kills at least 32
On Jan. 14, in Thailand, a construction crane fell on a moving train with nearly 200 passengers. The train was derailed, and the crash site was engulfed in smoke as a fire started. At least 32 people lost their lives, and many were injured. The railway was part of a Thai-Chinese project to connect China with Southeast Asia.
Grammy Glory: Latin Music and K-Pop Shine
On the first day of February, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny won Album of the Year for his album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, the first Spanish-language artist to do so. Kendrick Lamar won five awards, including record of the year for “luther“ with collaborator SZA. K-Pop’s first Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media was awarded to “Golden” by girl group HUNTR/X. During the ceremony, artists like Justin Bieber sported monochromatic anti-ICE pins in addition to their elaborate ensembles.
Winter Olympics hosted by two Italian cities
From February 6 to 22, Italian city Milan and famed ski resort Cortina d’Ampezzo will welcome athletes to compete in 116 medal events, including new sport ski mountaineering. To accommodate the athletes, the Opening Ceremony was hosted at four different venues across Italy, and concluded as two cauldrons—one for each host city—were ignited. The Paralympics Games will follow on March 6.
